BIG BEND, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol responded to two separate crashes on Interstate 10 Sunday afternoon in the Big Bend area, both involving vehicles swerving to avoid stopped traffic.

The first incident occurred at 1:50 p.m. near mile marker 267 in Madison County. According to FHP, a 63-year-old truck driver from Marathon sustained minor injuries after losing control of his eastbound tractor-trailer. The driver reportedly looked down briefly, then looked up to see traffic slowing ahead. In an attempt to avoid a collision, he swerved left into the grassy center median, where the truck rotated and overturned. The force of the crash caused the trailer to separate from the tractor.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the FHP. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office, EMS, and Fire Department all responded to the scene.

The second crash happened less than an hour later at 2:45 p.m. near mile marker 188 in Gadsden County. A 34-year-old woman from Southport was driving westbound with a child passenger when she swerved to avoid stopped traffic ahead. The SUV exited the roadway, rotated clockwise, and overturned, coming to rest on its side.

Both the driver and the child were wearing seatbelts and were not injured, authorities said.

The Florida Highway Patrol does not release the identities of crash victims in public reports. Both incidents remain under investigation.
