GOOCHLAND, Va. — A tragic accident on Interstate 64 claimed the life of a truck driver Wednesday afternoon after a tree fell directly onto his vehicle.

Virginia State Police (VSP) responded to the fatal crash around 3:30 p.m. on eastbound I-64 near mile marker 172.5. According to a preliminary investigation, a large tree collapsed onto a tractor-trailer traveling in the right lane, striking the truck’s cab and forcing it off the road.

The driver, identified as Frank James Porter-Loftin, 51, of Amelia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities reported that another vehicle was also impacted after striking debris from the initial incident.

As of now, the right travel lane remains closed, and crews are working to clear the wreckage. VSP is coordinating with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to divert traffic at Exit 167, allowing queued vehicles to pass through the left lane.

The incident remains under investigation by Virginia State Police.
