FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — A fatal crash involving a sedan and a fully loaded tractor-trailer shut down a portion of Interstate 495’s Inner Loop early Friday morning, according to the Virginia State Police (VSP).

The incident occurred around 1:50 a.m. near the Old Dominion overpass when a tractor-trailer carrying produce slowed for traffic in a work zone and was struck from behind by a sedan. Authorities said the sedan came to a stop underneath the trailer, and the driver of the sedan died at the scene.

The crash caused a full shutdown of the area near Exit 44 for Georgetown Pike for over four hours, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

By 6:30 a.m., crews had cleared the wreckage and all lanes were reopened to traffic.

The crash remains under investigation by Virginia State Police.
