PERMIAN BASIN, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS) has released alarming results from the 2025 International Roadcheck campaign, revealing that 38% of inspected commercial vehicles were placed out of service during inspections conducted in the Permian Basin from May 13 to 15.

The inspections were part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) annual Roadcheck effort, which took place across North America. TXDPS’s West Texas Division conducted inspections in Andrews, Ector, Howard, Martin, Midland, and Ward Counties.

According to TXDPS, the inspection results were as follows:

  • Total Commercial Vehicle Inspections: 443

  • Total Violations Cited: 1,309

  • Vehicles Placed Out of Service: 168 (38%)

  • Drivers Placed Out of Service: 19 (4%)

  • CVSA Decals Issued: 60

While the driver out-of-service rate (4%) was on par with national averages, the vehicle out-of-service rate (38%) was significantly higher than last year’s national average of 23%, indicating ongoing safety issues within the region’s commercial fleet.

Participating agencies included Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Troopers, Level I certified Highway Patrol Troopers, and Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program officers from Midland and Odessa Police Departments, the Ector County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ward County Sheriff’s Office.

The Roadcheck effort emphasizes removing unsafe vehicles and drivers from the road and promoting compliance with federal and state safety standards.
