LANSING, Mich. — Michigan lawmakers are considering new legislation that would restrict truck traffic from using the far left lane on roadways with three or more lanes.

House Bill 4522, introduced on May 22, 2025, by State Representative William Bruck, proposes a statewide regulation that would apply to:

  • Trucks with a gross weight over 10,000 pounds

  • Truck tractors

  • Combination vehicles with trailers or semitrailers

Under the bill, these vehicles would be prohibited from using the far left lane unless:

  • They are making a left-hand turn

  • They are avoiding a hazard or obstruction

  • Temporary signage or conditions due to construction require left-lane use

If construction reduces a three-lane road to two lanes, trucks would be required to remain in the right-most lane, unless one of the listed exceptions applies.

The bill has been referred to the Michigan House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure for review.

Supporters say the proposed rule would improve highway flow and safety, while opponents may raise concerns about lane flexibility and enforcement.
