ADDISON, Ill. — A rented Penske box truck exploded in a suburban Illinois neighborhood on Saturday, May 24, sending debris flying across residential streets, injuring the driver, and damaging at least four homes, according to Addison police and fire officials.

The explosion occurred around North Wood Dale Road between Oak Street and Overkamp Avenue during Memorial Day weekend. Ring camera footage captured the dramatic moment the truck suddenly exploded in transit, producing a loud blast, a cloud of smoke, and debris scattering across yards and rooftops.

Authorities from the Addison Fire Protection District (AFPD) and Addison Police Department (APD) arrived to find a large debris field, but no active fire. The DuPage County Bomb Squad and ATF investigated and determined the cause to be accidental — a leaking propane tank in the back of the truck. Officials confirmed there was no indication of foul play.

“I thought, ‘Wow, they’re starting early with the fireworks this year,’” said neighbor Angelo Source, “but that one sure had a little extra punch.”

The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized. One home was evacuated due to structural damage, with a load-bearing wall reportedly pushed several feet inward. Homeowners described the blast as feeling like an “earthquake” followed by a “tree falling on the house.”

The Penske truck had been rented for a household move, the company confirmed, noting that their rental policy prohibits transporting flammable or hazardous materials. Penske said they are cooperating fully with authorities.

Cleanup was underway Saturday evening, with Addison Public Works and DuPage County crews working to reopen the road and restore the area.
