Minneapolis, Minnesota Semi Truck Tips in Tunnel, Slices Roof Off Trailer

A dramatic truck crash inside a downtown Minneapolis tunnel was caught on state traffic cameras Friday morning, prompting major highway closures and a tragic secondary incident.
The crash happened just before 11:00 a.m. on May 30, 2025, as a semi-truck attempted to navigate a curve on I-94 near the Lowry Hill Tunnel. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the truck tipped over during the turn and struck a tunnel wall, ripping the roof clean off the trailer.
The truck was reportedly hauling ammunition at the time of the crash. The driver sustained non life-threatening injuries.
Traffic quickly backed up in the area, and authorities say a person stuck in the resulting gridlock suffered a medical emergency and later died. The identity of the victim has not been released.
Eastbound lanes of I-94 have since reopened, but westbound traffic is expected to remain closed until at least 3:00 p.m. Friday as crews work to clear the scene and conduct a full investigation.
The incident was captured on live MNDOT traffic cams and is still under active review.
