Interstate 40 remains closed Thursday morning in Cocke County, Tennessee, due to heavy flooding and a possible rockslide, according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT). The closure affects both directions of traffic near Exit 451, close to the Tennessee–North Carolina state line.

The incident began around 5 p.m. Wednesday, prompting emergency response and the deployment of geotechnical engineers to assess the area. TDOT said a barrier rail was being repositioned to allow vehicles stuck on the highway to turn around safely.

According to WATE, State Rep. Jeremy Faison shared images of deep water covering the roadway, underscoring the severity of the situation.

As a detour, motorists heading toward North Carolina are advised to take I-81 North to I-26 East. TDOT crews will continue evaluating the infrastructure impact throughout the day.

The National Park Service also reminded drivers that commercial vehicles are prohibited on US 441/Newfound Gap Road through Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
