CHICAGO — Commuters on the Kennedy Expressway faced heavy delays Thursday morning after a fatal rollover crash involving a refrigerated semi-truck carrying meat late Wednesday night.

The crash happened just after 11:30 p.m. near Belmont Avenue, when the truck, traveling inbound, rolled over the divider between the inbound local lanes and the outbound express lanes, according to Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation. No other vehicles were involved.

The driver of the truck was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities confirmed early Thursday.

The outbound express lanes and two inbound local lanes were closed for several hours overnight. All lanes reopened at approximately 6:30 a.m., but traffic remained extremely heavy during the morning rush. As of about 7:15 a.m., travel from downtown Chicago to O’Hare International Airport via the Kennedy was still taking over two hours.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
