SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — A Romulus man will spend at least 74 years in prison for causing a wrong-way crash that killed a Farmington Hills couple last year.

Angel Melendez-Ortiz was sentenced Friday after pleading no contest to 10 charges, including two counts of second-degree murder.

He received 37–60 years for the death of 45-year-old Ryan Ambrosio and 37–60 years for the death of 43-year-old Jennifer Dormitorio Ambrosio. The sentences will be served consecutively.

Melendez-Ortiz was also sentenced to additional time for fleeing and eluding police, reckless driving causing death, operating a vehicle with a suspended license causing death, and operating while intoxicated causing death. Those sentences will run concurrently with the murder terms.

The crash happened in January 2024 when Michigan State Police spotted a stolen pickup truck at a gas station on Eight Mile Road near the Southfield Freeway. Melendez-Ortiz fled, leading troopers on a chase down the Lodge Freeway and Telegraph Road. At one point, he turned off his headlights, made a U-turn, and drove south in the northbound lanes before crashing head-on into the Ambrosios’ GMC Terrain near Civic Center.

Ryan and Jennifer Ambrosio were returning home from a date night. They leave behind six children.
