I-40 Partially Reopens After Rockslide Near Tennessee–North Carolina Border

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced that Interstate 40 near the Tennessee–North Carolina state line has partially reopened after being closed for over a week due to a rockslide and major flooding.
As of June 27, one lane is open in each direction with a lower speed limit in place. Crews cleared debris from four different areas and repaired on- and off-ramps at the Waterville exit, completing the work in about a week instead of the estimated two.
According to TDOT, oversized loads remain prohibited in this stretch due to separate ongoing repairs from Hurricane Helene in 2024.
No injuries were reported when the rockslide occurred on June 18, but the incident left vehicles partially submerged. TDOT urges drivers to use caution and watch for work zones as repairs continue.
