A portion of a North Carolina highway has been shut down while officials inspect the nature of a depression beneath the roadway.

The NC Department of Transportation closed both lanes of Interstate 26 eastbound at US 25 south near Exit 54 on Thursday, August 12th.

According to ABC 13 News, an NCDOT spokesperson says engineers are inspecting the roadway and assessing the damage through a video exploration of utilities located under the road.

There is not yet an estimated time of reopening, but officials say the roadway will not be reopened until repairs have been completed and thoroughly inspected for safety.

Throughout the assessment, officials have set up a temporary detour for I-26 eastbound traffic:

Drivers are to take Exit 54 (U.S. 25 South) into South Carolina, then take S.C. 11 East back to I-26.
