The eastbound lanes of I-40 in Knoxville, Tennessee have been shut down due to a “crash involving multiple tractor trailers,” the Knoxville Police Department Tweeted.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:16 am on Monday morning in the eastbound lanes of I-40 at the I-640 split, MM 393.

One lane of westbound I-40 is also blocked by emergency vehicles. Traffic is being detoured to I-640 west.

At this time, it is unclear how long the eastbound lanes will be shut down.

At approximately 7:30 am, CST, Mark Nagi, Community Relations Officer for the Tennessee Department of Transportation – Region 1, Tweeted “All wrecked commercial vehicles have been towed away. Work continues on the spilled load and destroyed trailers. Cargo was approximately 48,000 pounds of powdered sugar.”

There is no information on how many vehicles were involved in the crash or the extent of injuries.

This is a developing story.
