A load of electric car batteries were scattered across a highway in Missouri on Thursday night after a chain-reaction semi truck crash.

The accident happened on January 27th on Interstate 44 in Rolla, Missouri.

According to Fox 2 Now, a semi truck hauling 33 lithium-ion batteries for Chevy Volt cars weighing in at 1000 pounds each overturned at mile marker 184. A second semi truck then struck the overturned rig and crashed into the median. The force of that collision ripped open the trailer of the overturned rig and scattered batteries across the roadway, causing some of them to catch fire.

Both truck drivers and one passenger were injured in the incident, and firefighters say that it took 12 people to free the victims from the wreck. They were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Further details have not been released.

It took crews around four hours to clear the wreck.
