Smithfield man dies after two-vehicle crash involving tractor-trailer in Isle of Wight

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, Va. — A 63-year-old man from Smithfield died Saturday morning following a collision between an SUV and a tractor-trailer in Isle of Wight County.
According to WTKR the crash occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Benns Church Boulevard and South Church Street. Virginia State Police said that the driver of a 2022 Honda Pilot, identified as James Norman Porter III, was traveling east on Benns Church Boulevard when he attempted to make a left turn. During the turn, his vehicle entered the path of a westbound 2024 Freightliner tractor-trailer.
The tractor-trailer collided with the SUV, critically injuring Porter. He was transported to Riverside Regional Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt in the crash.
Authorities confirmed that neither speed nor alcohol were contributing factors in the collision. Next of kin have been notified, and the incident remains under investigation.
