CASS CITY, Mich. — Three members of the Michigan-based family featured in the TLC reality series “Meet the Putmans” were killed Friday night in a crash involving a semi-truck in Cass City.

The victims were identified by family members as Bill "Papa” Putman, his wife Barb “Neenee” Putman, and their Aunt Megan. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Patch the crash occurred around 9 p.m. at the intersection of Hurds Corner Road and Deckerville Road. According to the Tuscola County Sheriff's Office, a semi-truck driven by a 55-year-old Florida man was traveling southbound on Hurds Corner Road when it failed to stop at a stop sign. The truck struck the Putmans’ Jeep, which had been headed east on Deckerville Road.

The Tuscola County Prosecutor's Office filed the following charges against 55-year-old Pavel Shchukin and he was arraigned Monday:

  • Three counts of moving violation causing death.
  • Five counts of moving violation causing serious injuries.

He faces up to one year in prison if convicted.

Five additional family members — Uncle Blake, Lulu, Alena, Noah, and Gia — were injured in the crash and transported to the hospital. Some were reported to be in critical condition.

The semi-truck’s driver and a passenger suffered minor injuries and were also hospitalized. The driver of the truck was arrested at the scene. Police say charges are pending, and a report has been submitted to the prosecutor’s office for formal review.

In a public statement, the Putman family expressed their grief, saying, “Even in this time of heartbreak, we rest in knowing that God is in control.”

The “Meet the Putmans” reality series aired on TLC in 2017. The show highlighted the unique lifestyle of the Putman family, who lived together under one roof — four adult children and their spouses, 15 grandchildren, and the patriarch and matriarch — sharing a single bank account, six bedrooms, and two bathrooms.
