PARKMAN TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A woman was killed and a man seriously injured Sunday morning when a commercial truck crashed into a horse-drawn buggy in Geauga County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).

Troopers from the OSHP Chardon Post responded to the crash around 7:39 a.m. on U.S. Route 422 near State Route 528 in Parkman Township. Investigators said a 2019 red Volvo commercial truck, driven by a 31-year-old man from Dearborn, Michigan, was traveling eastbound when it struck the rear of the buggy.

The impact ejected both occupants from the buggy. The passenger, identified as 60-year-old Mary A. Byler of Burton, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 62-year-old man also from Burton, was airlifted to University Hospitals Medical Center in Cleveland with serious injuries, OSHP said.

The truck driver was not injured and had been wearing a seat belt. OSHP reported that alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

According to WOIO Cleveland 19 News emergency responders from Parkman Township, Troy, Middlefield, and Community Care assisted at the scene alongside the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
