COLONIE, New York — Four cows died early Wednesday morning after a tractor-trailer hauling 41 cattle overturned on Alternate State Route 7, shutting down part of the road for several hours.

Emergency crews responded around 4:20 a.m. to the ramp from Alternate Route 7 westbound to Route 9, according to New York State Police. Of the 41 cows inside the trailer, four were killed from injuries sustained in the crash. The remaining cattle were evaluated at the scene by a veterinarian and later transferred into several other trailers.

According to WNYT, the recovery and transfer operation lasted roughly seven hours and required assistance from multiple agencies, including the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, the County Animal Response Team (CART), and several local fire departments.

Police said the cows were being transported from Cambridge, New York, to a holding facility in Stamford, Delaware County. No other vehicles were involved, and no human injuries were reported. Authorities have not released details on the cause of the crash or whether any charges are expected.

The New York State Department of Transportation reported that the left lane of the roadway remained closed for several hours as crews worked to upright the trailer and clear the scene. The lane reopened shortly after 9 a.m.
