Sand Dump Truck Hits Hemp Loaded Semi Head-On; Sheriff Kicks In Window to Help Rescue Dump Truck Driver
DOTHAN AREA, ALABAMA — Two people were seriously injured after a dump truck crashed head-on into a semi-truck early Thursday morning at an intersection just north of Enterprise, and the local sheriff who arrived moments after the wreck helped rescue one of the drivers, officials said.

The crash happened around 6:40 a.m. at the intersection of Salem Road and Highway 167, according to Sheriff Scott Byrd. Investigators said a semi-truck traveling on Salem Road went through the intersection when a dump truck traveling on Highway 167 struck the semi’s cab head-first. Both vehicles were heavily damaged and overturned along the side of the highway.

Sheriff Byrd said he came upon the crash less than a minute after it happened while driving to work. He reportedly kicked in the back window of the dump truck so he and an Enterprise police officer could pull the dump truck driver out.

Authorities said the semi-truck driver was trapped in the cab and responders had to cut him free using saws. Both drivers were transported to the hospital with serious injuries, and their conditions were not immediately known.

Officials said the highway remained closed as of noon as crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigate.

Sheriff Byrd said the semi was hauling a trailer loaded with legal hemp destined for a factory in Geneva, while the dump truck was carrying sand.
