A truck driver was killed on the side of the road in Texas over the weekend after stopping to help a motorist stranded on the side of the road.

The incident happened at approximately 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, August 21st in Kaufman County, Texas on highway 20 near mile marker 511.

According to Inforney News, a wreck between a Dodge Journey and a Toyota Sienna left the Dodge disabled in the eastbound lane of traffic, and that’s when the trucker noticed what was going on.

“An 18-wheeler noticed the crash and stopped in the lane of travel to assist,” said Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Kyle Bradford.

“There were three occupants in the Dodge Journey, one of the occupants got out of the vehicle to approach the the driver of the 18-wheeler, the occupants were discussing the crash when a pick-up truck attempted to swerve around the 18-wheeler failing to see the the disabled vehicle or the individuals standing in the roadway.”

The pickup struck the trucker and the driver of the Dodge, who was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The truck driver was pronounced dead on scene. No other injuries were reported.

Police are still investigating the incident and have not released the identity of the deceased truck driver.
