LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. — The driver of a semi-truck that overturned and blocked all eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 near Michigan City last month is facing felony OWI charges, according to the Indiana State Police.

Authorities say Joseph Shirley Jr., 51, of Alabama, was allegedly intoxicated when his truck overturned on October 21, 2025, about four miles east of the U.S. 421 exit.

Shirley claimed a blown tire caused him to lose control of his rig, which came to rest on its side across all three lanes. Several vehicles struck the overturned trailer, including one driven by a South Dakota motorist who suffered a broken leg.

Investigators said Shirley admitted to drinking about 10 beers while driving from Davenport, Iowa. Officers noted the odor of alcohol, visible signs of impairment, and a portable breath test that showed a blood alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit.

He was treated for minor injuries, booked into the La Porte County Jail, and later released on bond. His initial court hearing is scheduled for December 5.

A certified blood test is pending to confirm Shirley’s blood alcohol concentration, which will determine admissible evidence in court.

According to WSBT News, all eastbound lanes of I-94 were closed for several hours during cleanup and investigation.
