SUMMERS COUNTY, W.Va. — A tractor-trailer went off Interstate 64 and into a creek early Wednesday morning, prompting a major environmental response due to leaking diesel fuel and vehicle fluids, officials said.

According to WVNS, the crash occurred around 7:07 a.m. on November 12 near the 141.5 westbound mile marker in Summers County. Emergency crews found that the truck had left the highway, traveled about 350 yards through a field, and struck the right bank and trees along Lick Creek.

The Summers County 911 Center said multiple agencies responded, including EMS, fire, law enforcement, and emergency management teams. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Department of Transportation, and Division of Highways were notified, along with West Virginia American Water, after reports of diesel and other vehicle fluids leaking into the watershed.

Containment booms were placed downstream on Lick Creek to prevent the spread of contaminants. Environmental cleanup company Evergreen Environmental also assisted at the scene.

The driver escaped without injuries requiring hospital transport, and Smith’s Towing removed the tractor-trailer from the creek later in the day. DEP officials said they will continue monitoring water quality, but there is currently no danger to downstream water intakes.
