Semi-Truck Driver Cited After Sun Glare Sends Rig Across Median in I-8 Jackknife Near Maricopa
MARICOPA, ARIZONA — A semi-truck driver was cited after crossing the median and crashing on Interstate 8 Wednesday evening when troopers said the driver was blinded by the sun and reached for his visor, causing the truck to veer into the median and jackknife across the eastbound lanes.
First responders responded to the crash on Interstate 8 south of Maricopa just after 5:00 p.m., according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
Troopers said the driver was blinded by the sun and reached for his visor, which caused the semi to veer into the median before jackknifing across the eastbound lanes.
Crews spent more than four hours clearing the highway, and authorities said the driver was cited for speeding.
Authorities also issued a safety reminder, urging drivers to adjust sun visors, mirrors, and other controls while stopped, not while driving.
The investigation remains ongoing.
