RYE, NEW YORK — A truck driver is facing more than 20 federal and state violations after police stopped his commercial vehicle on Friday and discovered improperly secured heavy machinery, an unregistered trailer, and multiple licensing violations, according to the City of Rye Police Department.

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on November 28, 2025, when an officer patrolling Midland Avenue near Peck Avenue observed a truck hauling construction equipment that appeared unsafe for roadway travel. After noting several Vehicle & Traffic Law violations, the officer initiated a traffic stop and escorted the truck to a secure location for a full Department of Transportation inspection.

According to Rye Police, the inspection uncovered 22 total violations, including 7 out-of-service violations. Among the most serious findings was the improper securement of heavy machinery that was held in place by only one 3/8-inch chain rated for a 6,600-pound working load limit — far below the requirements for hauling such equipment. Officers also discovered that the driver was operating out of class, as he held only a Class D license despite needing a Class A to operate the vehicle.

Additional violations included:

  • An unregistered trailer displaying an improper Maine license plate

  • An unregistered power unit

  • A federal out-of-service violation for refusal of audit/no contact

  • An inactive DOT number

  • Multiple mechanical and credential-related deficiencies

Due to the severity and number of violations, police ordered the truck towed from the roadway and placed out of service.

Authorities emphasized that unsafe commercial vehicles pose significant risks to the public, and the department will continue proactive enforcement to keep dangerous trucks off local roads.
