The fatal collision occurred around 12:30 p.m. on November 3, when a 2018 Lexus carrying Sukanta Panda, 76, and his wife Itishree Panda, 71, pulled onto the right shoulder with a flat tire. As the couple waited inside their vehicle, a 2021 Peterbilt semi-truck driven by Mark Singleton, 59, of Morrow, came through a left-bound curve and drifted onto the shoulder, striking the rear of the Lexus with significant force. The impact sent both the Lexus and the tractor-trailer off the right side of the highway and into the grass.

According to FOX19, all three individuals were transported to Bethesda North Hospital. Sukanta Panda was pronounced dead shortly after 3 p.m., while his wife suffered broken bones but has since been treated and released. Singleton sustained minor injuries.

Investigators say there is no evidence of speeding or impairment, and all occupants were wearing seat belts. However, sheriff’s officials determined that Singleton’s semi drifted out of its travel lane and onto the shoulder, directly causing the crash.

Singleton was booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center and held overnight without bond. He faces a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge and is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit continues to investigate and is urging anyone with additional information to contact them at 513-825-1500.
