RICHMOND, VIRGINIA — A chain-reaction crash involving 10 vehicles, including a jackknifed tractor-trailer, shut down Interstate 95 South in downtown Richmond Friday morning as winter weather created slick and hazardous driving conditions.

The crashes occurred around 9:15 a.m. near Exit 74C (Broad Street), where a silver sedan lost control on the snow-covered roadway and crashed. According to Virginia State Police, that initial crash left debris and disabled vehicles blocking travel lanes, triggering additional collisions as other drivers were unable to stop in time.

Among the vehicles involved was a tractor-trailer that jackknifed across all southbound lanes, further worsening the roadway blockage and contributing to the extended closure.

According to WTVR, four individuals were transported to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. All lanes of I-95 South reopened shortly before noon, after emergency crews spent hours clearing vehicles and treating injured motorists.

Winter weather advisories were in effect across Central Virginia at the time, with snowfall reducing visibility and making roads slick. Virginia State Police continue to investigate the sequence of crashes and are reminding drivers to use caution in hazardous winter driving conditions.
