WHITELAND, INDIANA — A trucker returned to his trailer at an Indiana truck stop and discovered it had been loaded with millions of dollars’ worth of cocaine after he noticed the trailer seal had been tampered with, and investigators say no suspects have been arrested months after the seizure.

Authorities in Whiteland responded to the Pilot Travel Center in Whiteland, Indiana, at approximately 5:00 p.m. on June 17 after receiving a report of suspicious activity. Another report said law enforcement responded after receiving a report of suspicious activity at the Pilot Travel Center on East County Road at about 5:00 p.m. on June 17.

In a press release, the Whiteland Police Department said officers responded to the Pilot Travel Center located at 2962 East County Road 500 North around 5:00 p.m. Police said they went to the area after receiving a suspicious call.

When speaking with officers, the trucker said he was performing a pre-trip inspection when he noticed the seal on his trailer had been tampered with. Police said the trucker claimed the trailer seal had been removed and replaced, and he noticed the issue during his inspection.

Officers opened the trailer and found 10 boxes that were not part of the driver’s original load. Inside the boxes, police found 159 kilograms — about 350 pounds — of cocaine. The cocaine was estimated to be worth approximately $16 million, and another report described the total as an estimated $16 million worth of cocaine.

Investigators said the quantity created a serious safety concern. Police indicated they did not have enough space in the Whiteland Police Department evidence room to store the cocaine, and officers also worried someone might come looking for it. Investigators reported they no longer possess the cocaine because it was scheduled to be destroyed, and the department also said it would soon be destroyed.

One report said the seizure is believed to be one of the largest cocaine confiscations in Indiana’s history, while the Whiteland Police Department said that after a records check, officers now believe it was the largest cocaine seizure in Indiana’s history.

Nearly six months after officers found the cocaine, investigators still had not made any arrests related to the case.
