TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS — Police are investigating after a truck carrying an estimated $400,000 worth of live lobsters was allegedly stolen during a delivery run that began in Taunton on Dec. 12, with the shipment intended for Costco locations in Illinois and Minnesota but never reaching its destination.

Dylan Rexing, CEO of Rexing Companies, said his business arranged for a carrier to transport the lobsters from Taunton to the Midwest. Rexing said the truck left with the shipment, but the carrier turned off the GPS monitor shortly after departure and then disappeared.

Rexing said the cargo was never delivered and that he later learned the driver allegedly provided a fake identity, which he described as an increasing concern in the shipping industry. “We couldn’t get a hold of them anymore and we knew something was wrong,” Rexing said.

Rexing said the Taunton Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are investigating the case, and he said investigators are also looking into a similar incident involving crab from the same facility earlier this month.

The report also noted that the U.S. Department of Transportation has flagged cargo theft concerns to law enforcement agencies and freight carriers nationwide, warning that thefts can include both opportunistic trailer and load thefts and more coordinated operations that disrupt supply chains and create major economic losses.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not announced any arrests or recovery of the lobster shipment.
