COLUMBIA, MISSOURI — A California man is facing multiple charges after Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers said he led officers on a Christmas Day pursuit involving a semi-truck tractor that began near Montgomery City and ended south of Hannibal after more than 40 miles.

Troopers said the chase started on Highway 19 near Montgomery City when the driver, identified as Francisco Portillo, 42, failed to stop for state troopers. MSHP said the pursuit continued for more than 40 miles before ending on Highway 61 just south of Hannibal.

During the pursuit, troopers said tire deflation devices were deployed and the chase came to a safe ending. Authorities said Portillo allegedly hit a patrol car and other vehicles, but no injuries were reported.

MSHP arrest information listed the following charges:

  1. Resisting arrest

  2. Assault, second degree (two counts)

  3. Assault, fourth degree

  4. Careless and imprudent driving involving an accident

  5. Driving the wrong direction on a highway causing an immediate threat of an accident

  6. Armed criminal action

Portillo was booked into the Audrain County Jail, troopers said. A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

The case remains active as it proceeds through the court process.
