87-Year-Old Driver Escapes With Minor Injuries After Chevy Malibu Slams Into Turning Semi-Truck Near Commerce Township Walmart
COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN — An 87-year-old driver was taken to the hospital with injuries believed to be minor after crashing into the rear portion of a semi-trailer in Commerce Township Tuesday morning, with the impact pinning him inside his car and requiring firefighters to extricate him, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened at approximately 7:15 a.m. on Dec. 30 along Pontiac Trail, authorities said. Investigators said the semi-truck was in the process of turning onto eastbound Pontiac Trail from a Walmart parking lot when a westbound Chevrolet Malibu struck the rear portion of the trailer.

The sheriff’s office said the 87-year-old driver of the Malibu was pinned inside the vehicle and had to be freed by the Commerce Fire Department. He was transported to Henry Ford Hospital, where he was evaluated for injuries that were believed to be minor as of late Tuesday morning.
No other injuries were reported. The driver of the semi-truck was issued a citation in connection with the crash, officials said.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the incident was a reminder for motorists to use caution near commercial driveways and intersections, particularly when large commercial vehicles are entering or exiting roadways.
The investigation remains ongoing.
