SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH — Two separate semi-truck crashes during the Friday morning commute caused heavy delays on Interstate 215 near the Interstate 80 interchange, with one crash pushing concrete barriers into oncoming lanes and another blocking a ramp to eastbound I-80, according to Utah Highway Patrol and the Utah Department of Transportation.

UDOT first reported a crash at about 9:30 a.m. Friday after a semi-truck collided with a concrete divider on northbound I-215. Traffic cameras showed a white semi-truck with significant front-end damage stopped off to the side, while its trailer blocked several lanes.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Alexander said the semi-truck struck the barrier and pushed the concrete barriers into the southbound lanes, creating an additional hazard for oncoming traffic. Because of the displaced barriers, northbound I-215 was closed at the I-80 split so crews could bring in equipment and move the concrete barriers back into position.

Alexander said drivers were still able to use eastbound I-80 and access Salt Lake International Airport, but UDOT advised motorists to use alternate routes if possible and expect heavy delays in the area.

UHP said a second semi-truck crash occurred around the same time on northbound I-215 heading onto eastbound I-80, where another semi hit a barrier and blocked the entire ramp. Officials did not immediately release details on what caused either crash, how many people were involved, or whether anyone was injured.

Cleanup and roadway adjustments continued as crews worked to reopen lanes and ramps.
