A truck driver has been jailed on a $50,000 bond after killing two and injuring five in an alleged distracted driving crash.

The accident happened on Saturday, September 4th at around 9:25 a.m. in Lincoln, Nebraska. Bond was not set until Tuesday, September 8th.

According to 7 ABC News, 50-year-old Yorkwind Crawford was driving along Interstate 80 near the 27th Street interchange when he struck a pickup truck, killing the driver and his son. Crawford continued down the highway and struck six other vehicles west of the 27th Street interchange  before finally coming to a stop more than a mile down the road.

“He was operating a semi when he crashed into seven vehicles. Two of the individuals died at the scene. And five were taken to the hospital with injuries,” Deputy Lancaster County Attorney Amy Goodro said.

Officers believe that speed and driver inattention were the primary causes of the crash.

“He was tested for drugs and alcohol at jail. There was no indication he was under the influence,” said Crawford’s attorney, Mark Foxall, reported 1011 Now News, adding that his client has a clean record besides the recent incident.

The two people killed in the incident, Mark Kaipust, 41, and Taylor Kaipust, 7, were on their way to a huskers football game.

Crawford has since been lodged in the Lancaster County Jail, and the judge has set a $50,000 percentage bond, meaning that Crawford will need to post $50,000 to be released pending court proceedings.

“I am going to make condition of the bond that he waive extradition and he’s not to operate a motor vehicle,” said Lancaster County Court Judge Laurie Yardley.

Foxall says he believes Crawford will make bail. He is set for a preliminary hearing on October 21st.
