ELKRIDGE, MARYLAND — A fatal crash on Interstate 95 in Howard County forced lane closures in both directions during the Monday morning rush hour after a trash truck struck a parked tractor-trailer on the southbound side, Maryland State Police said.

The collision happened around 5:30 a.m. on I-95 southbound near Exit 43 (Maryland Route 100) in Elkridge, a major east-west corridor connecting areas including Ellicott City and Glen Burnie.

State police said the trash truck crashed into the rear of a parked tractor-trailer. Investigators have not said why the trash truck hit the parked vehicle.

The driver of the trash truck, identified as 47-year-old Lazaro Miranda of Baltimore, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Authorities reported two passengers in the trash truck were airlifted to the hospital, and at least one occupant from the tractor-trailer was also transported to a nearby hospital.

At one point, all southbound lanes of I-95 were shut down for the investigation, officials said. Northbound lanes reopened shortly before 9 a.m., while several southbound lanes remained closed later in the morning as crews worked the scene and troopers continued their investigation. Police said drivers should expect delays, particularly for travel between Baltimore and the Washington, D.C., area.

The crash remains under investigation.
