CHP Warns Drivers a Month of Fog Season Has Just Started After Weekend of Serious Fresno County Crashes Involving Commercial Vehicles

FRESNO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — The California Highway Patrol is warning drivers that “fog season is here” after multiple fog-related crashes over the weekend in Fresno County, including a multi-commercial-vehicle wreck and a separate fatal collision involving a semi-truck, according to CHP Fresno and local reports.

CHP said one major crash happened Friday morning, Jan. 16, on Highway 43 near Hanford, involving four commercial vehicles in foggy conditions. Officials said news crews were not allowed on scene due to concern over a possible spill involving toxic materials. CHP reported no serious injuries, but said the wreckage caused major traffic delays.

In a safety message, CHP urged drivers to plan ahead and slow down in fog, advising motorists to use low-beam headlights, buckle up, avoid distractions, and consider delaying travel when visibility is poor.

A second crash occurred Sunday morning, Jan. 18, on Clovis Avenue near Highway 99, where CHP said visibility was low due to dense fog. Investigators said a semi-truck attempted to turn near Golden State Boulevard when a southbound pickup truck struck the side of the trailer.

CHP said the force of the crash wedged the pickup’s cab beneath the trailer and caused the vehicle to catch fire, killing the pickup driver. The investigation remains ongoing.

CHP Fresno emphasized that fog can erase visibility and reaction time in seconds, urging drivers to use extreme caution in reduced-visibility conditions. Officials noted Central California’s fog season typically spans roughly from Veterans Day to Valentine’s Day.
