Two I-35 Semi Overturns Reported as Wind Gusts Hammer Southwest Iowa and Nebraska and Drivers Say Slowing Down Isn’t Enough

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA — Strong wind gusts sweeping through Nebraska and Southwest Iowa are increasing the risk of tractor-trailers overturning, with Iowa State Patrol reporting multiple semi rollovers along Interstate 35 as drivers warn the conditions can quickly become dangerous.

Iowa State Patrol said at least two semi-trucks flipped on I-35 — one near Ellsworth and another between Ankeny and Elkhart — as high winds pushed through the region. Truck drivers traveling through Omaha and Southwest Iowa said the gusts were intense enough that slowing down — or pulling over entirely — can be the safest option.

“The wind, it’s going to pull that truck right over,” said Robert Meyer, a semi-truck driver. “Might as well park it because it’s going to roll over.”

The warnings come just days after Iowa State Patrol confirmed a semi-truck driver was killed in a separate incident last week on I-80, where strong winds contributed to the driver losing control.

Officials and drivers say the threat isn’t limited to commercial vehicles. Anthony Anderson, a tow truck driver, urged motorists in passenger vehicles to stay alert and avoid distractions during high wind and winter weather conditions.

“Pay attention — that’s the biggest thing I would advise the cars to do,” Anderson said. “I see a lot of drivers with their phones in their hands racing down the road. Just slow down.”

Anderson added that snow, wind, and freezing temperatures make this one of the busiest times of year for tow operators and can turn minor crashes or breakdowns into dangerous situations if drivers aren’t prepared.

“If you don’t have the additives, you break down, you’re going to get cold,” Anderson said. “Try your best to stay warm. We’ll get to you guys as soon as we can.”

Forecasters say Omaha and Southwest Iowa could see another round of winter weather this weekend, including high winds and the chance for snow, prompting renewed calls for drivers to use caution and adjust travel plans if needed.
