Truck Driver Charged After Semi Hits Overhead Sign at Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and Gantry Collapses Blocking Southbound Lanes for Hours
CAPE CHARLES, VIRGINIA — A tractor-trailer driver was charged after a southbound semi struck an overhead sign gantry at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel early Sunday, causing the structure to collapse across the roadway and shut down all southbound travel lanes near the North Toll Plaza, officials said.

The crash happened at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, in the North Toll Plaza area, according to CBBT Marketing Specialist Paige B. Addison. Addison said the impact caused the entire gantry to fall across the roadway, blocking all southbound lanes. No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.
CBBT officials said all southbound lanes were temporarily closed as crews worked to clear debris. Traffic was later alternated around the incident until the roadway was fully reopened around 8:30 a.m.
The driver was charged with reckless driving, Addison said.
