26-Year-Old Driver Cited for Speeding on Snowy Road as Tractor-Trailer Hits Guardrail and Jackknifes on I-81 South Near McGraw
McGRAW, NEW YORK — A tractor-trailer jackknifed on Interstate 81 southbound in snowy conditions early Tuesday, blocking both southbound lanes for several hours, according to State Police.
Troopers said the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. near mile marker 49.9, south of Exit 50 (Polkville/McGraw). Investigators said the driver was traveling too fast for a snow-covered roadway and failed to maintain his lane. The tractor-trailer went off the road, struck a guardrail, and then jackknifed, coming to rest facing north in the southbound lanes.
State Police identified the driver as 26-year-old Vivek Kumar of Elmont, New York, and said he was not injured.
Officials said I-81 South remained closed until about 6 a.m. as crews cleared the scene. Police said traffic citations were issued in connection with the crash.
