OLDHAM COUNTY, KENTUCKY — A semi-truck driver was rescued early Friday, Jan. 31, after a crash in Oldham County left the cab suspended several feet above a creek bed in snowy terrain and sub-zero wind chills, according to the Pewee Valley Fire Protection District.

Pewee Valley firefighters said crews were dispatched with Oldham County EMS (OCEMS) to the intersection of Ash Avenue and Old Henry Road at around 6 a.m. for a report of a semi off the roadway. When responders arrived, they found the tractor-trailer had failed to stop for an unknown reason, crossed the roadway, and became airborne before striking an embankment — an impact that left the cab hanging over the creek bed.

Because of the rugged terrain and difficult access, mutual aid was requested from South Oldham Fire for additional manpower. Fire officials said crews used stabilization struts to secure the cab, chainsaws to clear trees and brush for better access, and a rope system to remove the driver from the wooded area after getting them out of the cab.

The driver was placed in a Stokes basket, safely removed from the scene, and transported by OCEMS. Officials said the patient was conscious and alert and had no apparent life-threatening injuries. The cause of the crash remains unknown.
