GASTONIA, N.C. — A Norfolk Southern train collided with a Swift Transportation semi-truck Saturday near Poplar Street and Airline Avenue, about a mile from downtown Gastonia, after the truck became stuck on the railroad tracks during the snowstorm, according to police.

Gastonia Police said the crash happened as low visibility, slick roads and reduced traction on elevated surfaces like railroad crossings made travel dangerous. Sgt. Dan Lane said that the truck was attempting to cross when it got stuck. The driver called 911, but police said there was not enough time to stop the oncoming train before it struck the truck.

Photos shared by police showed the blue Swift semi heavily damaged and pushed up against the train. Police noted the truck did not have a trailer attached at the time of the collision.

No injuries were reported. Police said the driver was able to get out before impact, and the scene remained an active investigation.

The crash also caused major delays as crews worked the scene. Sgt. Lane estimated the area could be tied up for four to five hours or longer, and police urged drivers to avoid the area, especially with snow still impacting road conditions.

Gastonia Police also used the incident as a reminder: if a vehicle ever becomes stuck on railroad tracks, call 911 immediately so dispatchers can contact the railroad and attempt to stop or slow incoming trains.
