OCEANSIDE, CALIFORNIA — A semi tractor-trailer driver walked away without injuries after a crash early Wednesday left the tractor portion of the rig partially hanging over the edge of the San Luis Rey Bridge on northbound I-5, just south of Harbor Drive, according to the Oceanside Fire Department.

The crash happened shortly after 5 a.m., prompting the California Highway Patrol to issue a Sig Alert as three lanes were temporarily shut down. When crews arrived, they found the tractor suspended over the bridge about 70 feet above the ground and worked quickly to stabilize the vehicle to prevent it from slipping further.

Firefighters accessed the driver by removing the rear cab window, then safely extricated him and evaluated him at the scene. Officials said the driver was not injured.

CHP, Caltrans, and the San Diego County Hazardous Incident Response Team also responded to assist with traffic control, recovery operations, and cleanup. Traffic backed up during the morning commute, impacting northbound I-5 and westbound State Route 76. Officials said two lanes reopened, but the far-left lane remained closed as crews continued working.

Authorities reminded drivers to use extra caution during wet weather conditions.
