TROUP COUNTY, GEORGIA — Federal investigators discovered more than 1,100 pounds of methamphetamine concealed inside a hidden compartment built into the roof of an empty tractor-trailer passing through Troup County, following a tip that the truck had traveled from the Texas-Mexico border.

The contraband was discovered on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. DEA agents stopped the tractor-trailer after receiving a tip about a truck traveling from the Texas-Mexico border deeper into the country. Upon initial inspection, agents found only an empty trailer — but a closer examination revealed a concealed compartment built into the ceiling and roof of the vehicle.

"Based on additional inspection by DEA agents and investigators, they determined that there was a concealed compartment or a hidden compartment in the ceiling and/or roof of the trailer," said Michael Mayer, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the DEA's Atlanta Division. "Investigators were surprised to find the entire roof full of drugs."

The compartment contained over 1,100 pounds — more than half a ton — of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of approximately $25 million. Mayer noted that the method of concealment was unusual. "More frequently, we see the drugs concealed underneath legitimate loads of goods, or impregnated into the actual goods hidden in things," he said. "In this particular case, the trailer itself was the concealment device."

The truck driver was identified as Peguy Daniel Auguste, 62, who was arrested and charged with drug trafficking. Auguste was granted a $10,000 bond and is being represented by the Georgia Public Defender Council. He remains in custody awaiting trial.

"We recognize the community's concern, but remind the public that at this stage of the case Mr. Auguste is presumed innocent. We will review the evidence and address it in court, not in the press. We ask the public to avoid speculation while the legal process unfolds," a Georgia Public Defender Council spokesperson said.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
