The crash occurred just before 3 a.m. on Interstate 290 near St. Charles Road. According to Illinois State Police, the semi-truck lost control at St. Charles Road and crashed through temporary concrete barriers before coming to rest on a new, unfinished portion of the expressway where it runs on elevated ramps over Vallette Street and Electric Avenue. The 18-wheel truck was left hanging on its side on the edge of the unfinished ramp. It is unclear whether the crash caused any structural damage to the overpass.

Inbound lanes of I-290 were closed between St. Charles Road and the Tri-State Tollway as crews responded to the scene. All inbound traffic was diverted off the expressway at St. Charles Road, with motorists advised to exit onto either eastbound or westbound St. Charles Road and work their way back to eastbound I-290. Vallette Street and Electric Avenue were also closed underneath the Eisenhower during the response. All lanes of the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) remained open, though temporary barricades were put in place near Vallette Street. The underpass remained closed at the time of reporting.

No injuries were reported. Cleanup of the scattered plastic cargo was expected to take several hours.
