DUTCHESS COUNTY, NEW YORK — A tri-axle dump truck loaded with 83,000 pounds of sodium chloride was pulled over in Millbrook after the driver continued driving from Fishkill without a missing tag axle tire in an attempt to complete a delivery, New York State Police said.

Troop K's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit stopped the dump truck after noticing something wasn't right with the vehicle. Upon inspection, troopers discovered the driver had lost a tag axle tire in Fishkill and continued driving to Millbrook in Dutchess County without it. Images from the scene show the bare axle hub with heavily worn brake components and no wheel or tire attached. Because of the missing tire, the truck was exceeding the tire load limit on both drive axles.

State Police used the incident to remind commercial vehicle operators of the importance of pre-trip inspections and proper vehicle maintenance, urging drivers to check tires, axles, and hubs before heading out, maintain proper fluid levels, perform a quick tire check before rolling, and keep a road-ready spare on hand.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
