Car Driver Cited for Following Too Closely After Sliding Under Semi Trailer on I-35 in Oklahoma, Rupturing Fuel Tank and Igniting Cooking Oil Fire
OKLAHOMA — A car driver escaped without injury after his vehicle slid underneath a semi trailer loaded with cooking oil on southbound Interstate 35 at Covell Wednesday morning, with his ruptured fuel tank igniting the cooking oil on the trailer in a fiery blaze.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on the morning of March 11, 2026, when traffic began to slow on southbound I-35. The car ran underneath the semi trailer, striking the rear dual tires. The driver managed to escape from the vehicle before his ruptured fuel tank ignited the cooking oil on the trailer.
The car driver was not injured. He was cited for following too closely.
"It's amazing that there were no injuries from this crash this morning," OHP said.
