High Winds Blow Over Three Tractor-Trailers on Same Stretch of I-35 in Love County, Oklahoma — One Driver Hospitalized, OHP Warns Empty Trailers Can Tip at 55 MPH Gusts

LOVE COUNTY, OKLAHOMA — Three tractor-trailers were blown over by high winds on southbound Interstate 35 near mile markers 14 and 15 in Love County last night, with one driver transported to the hospital with injuries expected to be non-life-threatening.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol responded to all three incidents, which occurred in the same stretch of highway. One driver was transported to a hospital for injuries but is expected to recover. No further details about the drivers were released.

OHP used the incidents to issue a safety reminder to both commercial drivers and motorists ahead of anticipated high wind gusts across Oklahoma. Officials noted that it does not take much wind to tip a large commercial vehicle — an empty trailer can tip at gusts of 55 to 65 mph, while a loaded trailer can tip at around 80 mph gusts.

OHP advised truck drivers to slow down, pull off the roadway if necessary, and park facing into the wind or behind a windbreak to reduce the risk of tipping. Motorists in passenger vehicles were reminded to give trucks plenty of space and avoid driving in their blind spots.

"Strong winds make driving large trucks and even smaller vehicles very dangerous," OHP said. "Please take precautions, slow down, and stay safe."
