Pickup Truck Driver Killed in Crash With Two Tractor-Trailers in I-83 Work Zone Backlog; Both Truck Drivers Uninjured
NEWBERRY TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLVANIA — A pickup truck driver was killed Monday morning after a crash involving two tractor-trailers on southbound Interstate 83 in Newberry Township, where traffic had backed up through a weekend construction zone that was in the process of being cleared.
Pennsylvania State Police Troop J were called to the scene at approximately 5:58 a.m. near mile marker 32.9, between Exit 33 (Yocumtown/Route 392) and Exit 32 (Newberrytown/Route 382). The pickup truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of both tractor-trailers were not injured.
PennDOT had been conducting a weekend project on southbound I-83 between exits 33 and 32. The work zone was in the process of being cleared when the crash occurred in the backlog of traffic that had built up in the area.
Southbound I-83 was closed between the two exits for an extended period while investigators worked the scene. Northbound lanes also experienced severe delays. The York County Coroner's Office, PSP Troop J Forensic Services Unit, and the Troop J Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist Unit all responded to assist.
The identity of the deceased driver has not been released. The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact Pennsylvania State Police York at 717-428-1011.
