Pennsylvania troopers say deadly I-80 pileup involved 55 trucks, 11 cars, interstate remains closed

Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) have released more information about Wednesday’s deadly pileup crash that involved dozens of semi trucks.

The crash occurred at 3 p.m. on December 16 in the westbound lanes of I-80 in Greene and Lamar Townships. A winter storm was moving through the state at the time that the crash occurred and travel restrictions were in place on many roadways in the state. PSP says that a total of 66 vehicles were involved in the pileup along a one mile stretch of interstate. Troopers say that 11 of the vehicles were cars and the other 55 were commercial vehicles.

A winter storm was moving through the state at the time that the crash occurred and travel restrictions were in place on many roadways in the state. PSP says that a total of 66 vehicles were involved in the pileup along a one mile stretch of interstate. Troopers say that 11 of the vehicles were cars and the other 55 were commercial vehicles. Police also clarified that one person traveling in a passenger vehicle died as a result of the crash. A second person who was caught up in the traffic backup caused by the pileup suffered a medical emergency and also passed away. According to a statement released by PSP around 1 p.m. on Thursday, I-80 westbound remains shut down as crews work to remove wrecked vehicles. I-80 eastbound is also restricted in the area to allow for vehicle removal. Follow PSP on Twitter for the latest road closure information.
