Indiana police say a man lost his life in an accident involving a train in Hagerstown on Monday.

Shortly after 10 a.m. on Monday, March 14, a Norfolk Southern Train Conductor contacted Wayne County authorities to advise that a person had been struck by the train in the area of 4379 North Jacksonburg Road in Hagerstown, Indiana.

Wayne County Sheriff’s Department (WCSD) deputies responded to the scene along with firefighters and emergency medical crews.

Investigators determined that 61 year old Indiana resident Daryl King was struck by an eastbound train while filling a tractor trailer with grain.

“It appeared as though Mr. King did not hear the approaching train, possibly due to noise from the Tractor and other equipment located on the property. The force of the collision caused Mr. King to fall near his trailer, which subsequently overflowed. Mr. King was then buried by a large mound of grain. Despite rescue efforts, Mr. King died as a result of his injuries,” WCSD said in a news release.

Police said that all Norfolk Southern safety and warning systems appear to have been functioning at the time of the accident.

“Special thanks to members of the Hagerstown Volunteer Fire Department, Reid Health Mobile Trauma, the Wayne County Coroner’s Office, and Wayne County Emergency Communications Department for their involvement in this tragic incident,” WCSD said.
