A parts manufacturer has issued a recall affecting more than 100,000 trucks due to a possible steering gear defect.

The recall has been issued by R.H. Sheppard. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents, certain Sheppard Steering Gears may have been assembled incorrectly, which can cause the gear to fracture. This, in turn, could result in the the loss of steering capabilities, increasing the risk of a crash.

A total of 105,271 steering gear units are affected by the recall.

The Sheppard Steering Gears models affected by the recall include:

  • HD94E
  • M100P
  • M110P
  • HD94P
  • XD120P
  • MD83P
  • SD110P
  • M83P
  • M90P
  • M80P

According to NHTSA documents, 29 manufacturers have purchased the recalled steering gears, including Volvo Trucks North America, Navistar, Peterbilt Motors Inc., Kenworth Truck Co., and Daimler Trucks North America.

As part of the R.H. Sheppard recall, Volvo Trucks has recalled 1,632 model year 2022-2023 VN tractor trailers.

Also as part of the R.H. Sheppard recall, 6,492 model year 2021-2022 Freightliner (FCCC) MT45, 2022-2023 Western Star 4900 and Freightliner Cascadia vehicles have been recalled by Daimler Trucks North America.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on July 15, 2022. A remedy for the defect is still in development.
