Historic Delaware bridge damaged when trucker tried to cross

A truck driver was reportedly cited on Monday after an unsuccessful attempt to cross a bridge originally built in 1839.
The incident occurred April 19, 2021, at Smith’s Bridge over Brandywine Creek in New Castle County, Delaware.

Police say that a semi truck attempting to cross the bridge caused damage but that the bridge remains structurally sound. In images shared by the Delaware Department of Transportation, you can see that the truck’s trailer suffered significant damage during the bridge strike.
Local news outlet WDEL reports that that truck driver was cited for inattentive driving along with other violations.
Smith’s Bridge was built in 1839 and rebuilt after it was set on fire in 1961.
